Outlook and Hotmail email checker: does the account exist?

Enter an Outlook.com, Hotmail, Live or MSN address and you'll get a clear yes or no: the address is looked up with Microsoft's sign-in service, the same lookup Microsoft's sign-in page makes when you type an address. No email is sent, you don't sign in, and the address isn't stored.

Try:

What gets checked

  • Does it exist?

Asks the mail provider where it can. No email is sent

  • What happens if you email it

    Delivered, bounces or might bounce

  • What kind of address

Personal Gmail, domain email or a throwaway inbox

  • Where the mail goes

Its own inbox, or forwarded somewhere else

  • Typos

    Fixes slips like gmial.com

  • Advanced details

Score, MX, SPF, DMARC and the mail-server log

How to check if an Outlook or Hotmail address exists

  1. 1

    Enter the address

Paste an address ending in outlook.com, hotmail.com, live.com or msn.com (country versions like hotmail.co.uk or outlook.de work too) and press Check.

  2. 2

    Read “Exists”

“Yes” means Microsoft has an account with that address, so email should be delivered. “No” means there's no such account: email will bounce, and the address may be free to sign up for.

  3. 3

    Check more at once

Switch to Bulk to check up to 50 addresses. Outlook and Hotmail rows are confirmed with Microsoft the same way.

Which addresses it can confirm

  • Outlook.com and Hotmail

    outlook.com, hotmail.com and their country versions such as hotmail.co.uk, hotmail.fr or outlook.de.

  • Live, MSN and older domains

    live.com, live.co.uk and other live.* domains, msn.com, passport.com and windowslive.com.

  • Not work or school accounts

Microsoft 365 addresses at a company or school domain hide whether a user exists, so they're not looked up and show “Not confirmed”.

What the result means

If Microsoft confirms the account, the result is Valid and email should reach it. If Microsoft says there's no account, the result is Invalid: mail will bounce, and the address may be free to register. An account that exists can still be abandoned or have a full inbox, and a closed account can show as not existing. If Microsoft is busy and doesn't answer, the result says “Not confirmed” rather than guessing.

What about Gmail and Yahoo?

This lookup is Microsoft's only. Gmail, Yahoo and most other providers only confirm a mailbox to a direct mail-server check, which isn't available on this site right now, so their addresses show “Not confirmed”. You still get the typo, domain, MX, disposable and role checks for them.
